Naia saves Parker from a beating, with Parker later returning the favor. As she flees she encounters Parker ( Claudia Black), a street saxophone performer being set upon by city police who incorrectly believe she is part of the riots. Naia ( Tara Strong) is one such debt slave, genetically modified to have enhanced lung capacity in order to survive harsher work environments.ĭuring a protest riot, Naia is freed with many other debt slaves from a holding cell on Ganymede. However, this proved untrue, and by the 28th century a large portion of the population are in permanent debt bondage from birth. Most of the refugees fleeing earth did so in exchange for an agreement of indentured servitude, projected to last "at most" one or two generations. For good reason.Set at the end of the 28th century, the human race has long since abandoned a desolate earth, colonizing Jupiter's moons, particularly Ganymede. I'm guessing he made it for two bits and a nickel, but it has received almost universal praise since it debuted at Sundance last year. There used to be more movies like this, in which character development is paramount and careful observation is rewarded. This one is beautifully restrained, which almost makes it old-fashioned. The fact that he has made three other features with gay themes and characters might have given it away. Wikipedia tells me that Ira Sachs is Jewish and openly gay. Molina, playing a Brit (which he is), has just a tinge of the foreigner's aloofness, a sense of watchfulness. Kate is trying to write, while he just wants to talk. Lithgow gives a beautiful sense of the ache that separation gives him, and of Ben's unintentional lack of awareness. Molina and Lithgow, both celebrated performers, are seldom seen nowadays, but it's a pleasure to watch the minimalist way that each does his job. Kate's teenage son Joey (Charlie Tahan) thinks it is too much to have to share his room with Uncle Ben. Party every night? Not when you're approaching 70. That's a large part of what the film is about – how we want different things at different ages. The arrangement is temporary – just long enough for director Ira Sachs ( The Delta, Forty Shades of Blue) to observe the generational differences between these people. Great to have them back on screen: Alfred Molina and John Lithgow in Love Is Strange. After George gets fired by the Archdiocese for his gay marriage, that will be tested. Kate (Marisa Tomei), a novelist married to Ben's nephew, gives a glowing speech about their importance to her family. The film opens the day they get married, surrounded by friends and family. Ben frets, so George calms next day it's the other way round. They're a committed couple, gentle and affectionate and tolerant of each other's foibles. George teaches music at a New York Catholic college Ben is retired, but still working hard at his painting. It's about a very practical problem: the difficulties of love for an older couple who have lost their home.īen (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) have been together almost 40 years. It offers a kind of trickle-down form of drama akin to the randomness of real life. It's so low key that you barely notice when big things are happening. Love is strange and so is this movie, but in a good way.
